Top 5 Telugu Movies in 2012

The year 2012 is coming to an end and it is time to have a look at what scored the best figure at the box office. So, here is a look at the top 5 films for 2012.

1. Gabbar Singh
‘Gabbar Singh’, the remake of Hindi block buster ‘Dabagg’ was released on May 11 2012. This filled the drought of Pawan Kalyan’s string of flops and it amassed a whopping Rs 70 crores. It also broke the ‘iron leg’ spell of Shruti Haasan and pushed director Harish Shankar into the top league. The film was produced by Bandla Ganesh Babu with a whopping budget of around Rs 30 Cr and the grossed Rs 110 Cr at the end of business as per the official announcement. The share was almost 65 Cr as stated above. The film did a fantastic business even overseas.

2. Eega
Yet another marvel from S S Rajamouli, this became a new benchmark in terms of visuals and graphics for Tollywood. The film made a whopping Rs 45 crores share at the box office as per an approximation. The film took Tollywood to next level with state of the art graphics used in it. The point to be underlined is that this film comprises no big star but still could grab huge openings and sustain collections just because of Rajamouli factor. Though there are many criticisms that the film was copied from Australian film ‘Cockroach’ and other film ‘Bee’, the film ‘Eega’ deserves great commendation for the bold attempt targeting just the Telugu and Tamil population. The budget incurred on the film was about Rs 26 Cr.

3. Rachcha
‘Rachcha’ was released on April 5, 2012. Despite the fact that it got average ratings and mixed talk at the start, this Ram Charan – Tamannah starrer grossed Rs 45 crores. Many say it is purely the stamina of Charan which gave the success. The film was made with a whopping Rs 30 Cr budget in the production of RB Choudary and finally ended up in huge profits. This film took Sampath Nandi’s image to next level for scoring success with a big star.

4. Julayi
The film was released on Aug 9, 2012. Allu Arjun who was desperately seeking a hit managed to smile at last with this film. Director Trivikram Srinivas’s dialogues and comedy worked and the film fetched around Rs 40 plus crores. S Radha Krishna and DVV Danayya produced the film. The film scored the attention of audience for the dialogues of Trivikram Srinivas. This film gave a break for Trivikram Srinivas after making two flops ‘Khaleja’ and ‘Theenmaar’ (Dialogue writer) in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

5. Business Man
Mahesh Babu added one more hit to his record with this one as it touched Rs 40 plus crores. Director Puri Jagannadh’s punch dialogues and Mahesh characterization helped a lot in this. The budget incurred on the film was about Rs 25 Cr. It is indeed true that the effect of Dookudu brought huge openings for Businessman initially but the dialogues of Puri Jagannath, those came out with a flavor of blatant truths have synced well with the youth and they have been quoted big way on social networking sites. Puri Jagannath scored big as dialogue writer for this film than as the director.

Other than the above, the following are the movies which did good business and registered commercial success though not recorded as block busters.

‘Ishq’ gave hero Nithin the much needed break just as he was about to pack his bags. The Nithya Menon factor also worked a great deal in this one. The film was made with an approximate Rs 9 Cr budget but made Rs 24 Cr as gross at the end of business. That’s really breathing news for many average budget films and the love stories. N Sudheer Reddy and Vikram Goud produced this film in the direction of Vikram K Kumar. PC Sree Ram’s cinematography and Sreekar Prasad’s editing were much talked about those contributed for the success of this film.

‘Denikaina Ready’ was released on Oc 24, 2012. Manchu Vishnu and Hansika combination worked for the film and though there was a lot of controversy which happened, everything ended positively for the makers. Though it has elements to become a big hit of the year, the Brahmin controversy and shutting down theatres at a few places troubled the movie from getting collections. G Nageshwara Reddy directed it on the banner of Mohan Babu.

Despite the fact that there was perverse and vulgar comedy in it and had every ingredient to corrupt the youth, ‘Bus Stop’  found a thumbs up from the audience and gave its director Maruthi the tag of ‘Boothu’ director. Bellomkonda Suresh produced this film with the meager budget but gained a lot at the end. The film suffered many censor cuts but still proved to be the most vulgar film ever seen in last few years.

And last but not least, ‘Sudigadu’ was released on Aug 24, 2012. This was one of those unusual rom-coms which was a satire on almost every notable hit of Tollywood. Allari Naresh got himself the title of Sudden Star with this one. The film was made in the production of D Chandrasekhar Reddy at a budget of Rs 8.2 Cr and collected a huge gross at the end as per announcement. The film pulled the attention of A,B and C center audience with typical satirical comedy on all Telugu films. The film was inspired from ‘Tamil Padam’, that released in Tamil a couple of years ago.
