Google pulls back New Gmail Chat Features

New chat design brought video, voice and group chat icons in IM window but was pulled back due to issues

Yesterday, Google had rolled out a spruced up Gmail chat interface that brought along Video Chat, Voice Chat and Group Chat shortcuts in Instant Message window. Later, Google discovered issues with new chat design that impacted small number of Google Apps users and hence pulled back the new chat interface. The video, voice and group chat settings already existed but in the menu at the bottom of each chat window.

On the official Gmail Blog, Josh Teague, User Experience Designer at Google, noted that new chat design in Gmail had caused issues with Google Apps users. Hence the chat design update has been pulled back from Gmail and would be rolled out again next week or so after fixing it.

Just ensure that you've downloaded and installed the Voice and Video chat plugin from Google. Stay tuned to your Gmail Inboxes as the new chat design can drop in any time.

Google Employees Get the Google Phone

The Google Phone rumor has been heating up for the past few days and in what is obviously the climax of this ongoing show, Engadget has managed to scoop up images of the Google Phone in action - possibly at a Google employee's desk. The phone, also known as the "Nexus One", seems to be a decently spec-ed device and as of now, there is no indication of Google making this phone available to the general public. The phone was apparently handed over to Google employees over the past week. Confirmation of the device's existence was a seen in the form of Tweets from Google employees and later a confirmation from Google on one of its blogs that they were indeed, "dogfeeding" its employees with a new Mobile device. Now, dogfeeding is nothing but Google's way of telling that they are testing a new product and that the employees are helping them with the test. The blog post adds, "The mobile lab is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it."This is what we officially know about the Google Phone.
The rest of the story has been meticulously pieced together by curious blogs like TechCrunch (who first reported the existence of the Google Phone) and Engadget (who seems to have found the first pictures of the phone at work.)As for the phone, the Nexus one is believed to be a very capable Android laden device running a 1Ghz snapdragon processor and boasting of Android 2.0.1. The phone is believed to be unclocked and has also seen an update recently. The device (obviously) comes loaded with Google Navigation and there is a dearth of physical buttons on the phone with just two of them making it on to the front fascia. In fact, apart from the volume rocker and the front controls, pretty much everything is touch based. Another interesting facet about the Google Phone is that it does not seem to be made by HTC which gives rise to the question - Who exactly made this phone for Google?

Google Chrome OS is ready to Launch in Next Week

Google Chrome Operating System Preview and Screenshot
Google’s Chrome OS project, first announced in July, will become available for download within a week, as said by Google.
What’s Google Chrome:
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system. However the operating system will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year, Google is planning to open-source its code. Its a boon for the developers to work on it. Netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second quarter of 2010.
Google Chrome OS is reportedly being created for people who spend most of their time on the web surfing and browsing. Also Google said in their blog that Chrome OS is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.

Expectations Overwhelmed:
With over 4 months of development of Google Chrome OS, it is set to release the coming week. And as always like any other Google product, the Chrome OS will be available for free download. There have been a number of screenshots resembling as Google Chrome OS. But officially or by leaking of images there has never been a screenshot of the Chrome OS on the web. Google has always created a lot of hype for its products be it the Google Wave or Google Voice or the New Orkut. But this time around it is entirely a different story so far. May be the hype would start from now on as the Official Statement of release of Google Chrome OS has come.
Situation At Present:
Driver support will more or less be a weak point. Drivers and Applications is extremely important to the success of Chrome OS but it remains a question mark. People will be eager to download this OS as soon as it is released, probably the coming week anyway.
Google has already said they are working with Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba on this Google Chrome OS project.
Compatibility:
However the compatibility is still a question. There have been many reports and speculations that you need to have compatible devices for the OS to work. So it is not assured that you can install Google Chrome OS on your computer or laptop on the day of release due to compatibility issues.
Google Chrome OS is designed to run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. The software architecture is simple as Google says that Google Chrome running within a new window system on top of a Linux Kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using their own favorite web technologies. Also adding to these, the apps will not only run on Google Chrome OS but on any OS like Windows, Mac, Linux and more.

Here is another speculated Google Chrome screenshot. There are completely many variations in the two screenshots proving that the actual Google Chrome OS screenshot is yet to be released. Watch out for Google Chrome OS in the coming week and Stay Subscribed to our blog to get the release updates.
